    Tried so many tutorials but can’t seem to figure out my problem.

    I’ve managed to connect my Xbox controller and stop the blinking so it’s selected player 1 but I still can’t manage to use the controller in an actual game.

    Can anyone point me in a direct of a tutorial or give me some pointers?

    The config file for the Retroarch cores is located in /opt/retropie/configs/all/

    Try the auto config:

    sudo chown pi /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg
    cd /opt/retropie/emulators/RetroArch/installdir/bin
    sudo ./retroarch-joyconfig -j 0 >> /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg

    (Use -j 1 for wired pad)

    Thanks for your reply trimmtrabb.

    When I run the last line it says “couldn’t open joystick #1”. Any ideas?

    Just noticed a line of script above when I exited emulation station saying the following;

    ‘Your xbox/xbox360 controller should now be available as:

    /dev/input/js0
    /dev/input/event2

    I’m using a wired controller, does the line above need to show /dev/input/js1??

    If so do you know how to Change it?

    Usually wired pads are assigned js1, try the above command again but use -j 0

    Changed the script to -j 0, Inputed buttons when prompted and still nothing.

    Any ideas?

    The keyboard seems to work in the games though.

    Closest I’ve got before was following the emulationstation adjustments section of this link https://github.com/retropie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/Advanced-Configuration

    when I ran /home/pi/.emulationstation/es_input.cfg I got the following screen which lists both an Xbox Gamepad and Microsoft Xbox 360 pad.

    Previously I tried copying the script in the tutorial above but I only managed to get one or two buttons working.

    Anyone?!?

    Frying my brain this is.

    With the pad plugged in type: ls /dev/input/ (this list the assigned device numbers of joysticks/gamepads)

    Note the number after js

    Here is my retroarch.cfg setup for a 360 pad: http://blog.petrockblock.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/retroarch_xbox360pad.zip

    You need to edit it and change input_player1_joypad_index = to the number noted above.

    Place it in /opt/retropie/configs/all/

    To test buttons and make adjustments:

    sudo apt-get install joystick

    jstest /dev/input/js* (replace * with js number as above)

    HI trimmtrabb.

    I did a fresh install yesterday and managed to get the pad to work using the following script and entering the controller keys.

    sudo chown pi /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg
    cd /opt/retropie/emulators/RetroArch/installdir/bin
    sudo ./retroarch-joyconfig -j 0 >> /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg

    I then got in to the retroarch.cfg file and copied it to the same as your file. Now the buttons are all over the place.

    Any ideas?

    Easiest way is to use a SSH client such as Putty (Windows) or use built in Terminal on a Mac.

    Connect via SSH to the PI, you need the Pi’s IP. If you type ifconfig in the terminal on the Pi it will display this.

    Port number is 22 for SSH

    Username is pi and password is raspberry (you can change this once you have logged in with: passwd)

    Then to edit retroarch.cfg:

    sudo nano /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg

    Copy from the template I posted and edit input_player1_joypad_index= as mentioned above. Ctrl X and press Y to save. You can also modify using jtest as mentioned above.

    I recommend you read up on using SSH and FTP with the Pi, it makes things a lot easier.

    Connected to the pi using winscp and edited the retropie.cfg but its still not working.

    Managed to make some progress. I’ve added the script to stop the controller blinking in /etc/rc.local and now the start, A & B buttons work but no others including the D-pad.

    Also noticed when I exit emulationstation, in the script that appears it says no xbox or xbox 360 driver found? Would that be why?

    EDIT: Try suggestion in last post first

    If you got the autoconfig to work I would delete everything in retroarch,cfg and run that again. Then you can adjust the controls to your liking using jtest (it will display the buttons you are pressing so you can work out which is which and edit accordingly):

    sudo apt-get install joystick

    jstest /dev/input/js* (replace * with js number you used for auto config)

    By the way the retroarch.cfg you posted has the controls commented out, remove the #’s to enable them

    Removed the #’s, didn’t make any difference. Removed the script from retroarch.cfg, ran the following script `sudo chown pi /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg
    cd /opt/retropie/emulators/RetroArch/installdir/bin
    sudo ./retroarch-joyconfig -j 0 >> /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch.cfgthensudo apt-get install joystickthenjstest /dev/input/js0`

    Made a note of the numbers by pressing each button, went back in to retroarch.cfg and pasted your script again and looked to change the buttons but they were the same. Still no different to yesterday, only B, Y, and start work.

    Is there any files I can delete then run again from scratch? and in what order?

    Right I’ve finally got it working.

    Followed the following thread http://blog.petrockblock.com/forums/topic/xbox-360-controller-set-up-v2-3/v and copied someone’s retroarch.cfg file and it works. Only tried the snes emulator so far.

    I think I may have been editing the wrong file :/

    @Swandog–

    You and I were struggling with the same issues at about the same time! I worked until 3AM Sunday morning getting it sorted out.

    Did you finally get everything working?

    Trimtab’s suggestions especially around “jstest” were the turning point for me.

    In addition use Method #3 in the “Setting Up the XBox360 Controller” instructions; the rc.local trick (method 1) isn’t the best.

    Yeah I eventually got it working, took me almost a week but got there in the end.
