    Hi all. I hope somebody out there will be able to help me. I’ve been struggling with this for a few hours now and out of ideas.

    I’m running RetroPie on my RasPi B+. It installed perfectly, but I’ve not been able to configure my USB Controllers.

    I’ve run the setup in terminal. I’ve run the setup from RetroPie-Setup. I’ve manually typed out the whole config and pasted it into /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg and nothing has worked.

    When I plugged in the controller and ran the config the first time it immediately recognised the controller and saved it’s own .cfg file in /opt/retropie/emulators/RetroArch/configs/ I thought I was onto a winner…but apparently not.

    The weird part is, the controller works OK for the emulationstation GUI, just the button mapping all seems to change when I load a game?

    Just thinking while I type this, could it be the game ROM I’m using? I’ve only loaded one ROM onto my Pi so far for testing…but maybe that’s the issue.

    Can anyone help with this? Thank-you.

    If you updated the retro-pie script this may be the issue:

    If you go in this directory and type ls -lah
    /opt/retropie/emulators/RetroArch/configs/

    do you see a file that has been updated recently?

    Or as you say, pasting a valid button config direct into the retroarcg.cfg file in opt/retropie/configs/all should work

    Hi Floob. Thank-you for replying.

    I’ve just tried it again. I actually deleted the .cfg file that it auto populated by running sudo ./retropie_setup.sh and re did it again so the button mapping is perfect, but the same thing happens when I load a game.

    I’ve just booted up my pi into emulationstation and the arrow keys work great, and the other buttons seem to be ok (‘start’ brings up the menu, ‘x’ selects the option, all good) but as soon as I start the game the mapping seems to change. Suddenly it’s ‘L2’ and/or ‘Triangle’ to select anything, and the start button just gives me a black screen.

    Starting to struggle now.

    Also just wanted to add as it may be important. Every time I try to run the ./retroarch-joyconfig command I get a response of “bash: ./retroarch-joyconfig: No such file or directory”

    If I go to this folder in filebrowser should I see something called retroarch-joyconfig? If so, it’s not there.

    The emulationstation controller file isnt used in games, its a separate one kept here:
    /home/pi/.emulationstation/es_input.cfg

    Can you post your autogenerated controller file?

    Do you have many difference between your retroarch.cfg and mine?

    I finally found the retropie-joyconfig file and managed to run it which generated this .cfg file:

    Can you go here:
    /opt/retropie/emulators/RetroArch/configs/

    and type ls -lah

    Can you post the content of the file that has been autoupdated in there, along with its full filename? (It should have a fairly recent timestamp)

    i.e. mine is
    USB2-axis8-buttongamepad.txt

    It starts with these lines which are quite important

    input_device = "USB,2-axis 8-button gamepad  "
    input_driver = "udev"

    I’d be tempted to strip these lines out of your retroarch.cfg as you are using autodetect anyway (input_autodetect_enable = true)

    The commands you have below will take priority over the autoconfigs – but best not to have two – plus you may need the “” around the buttons.

    after hours of confusion, I stumbled to this post and it was indeed the new script that was messing with my usb controller set up. I re-installed retropie 2. into my microsd and didn’t update anything. After this I setup the controls from the retropie_setup.sh and everything worked! I hope no one else falls victim to this

    Thanks for your continued help with this but it’s just not working still.

    I’ve gone to the extreme now. I’ve deleted the autopopulated file for my controller, removed all the auto detect settings from retroarch.cfg and placed the button mapping in there. I’ve tried it with “” and without and still the buttons are not in the correct layout. I’m just about to try it with a different game just to make sure I’m not going crazy.

    Does it sound like I might need to reinstall?

    Yes – starting again could clean things up.
    But I really cant help until you post the info requested above – the ls -lah command in that dir so we can see the filename and datestamp of your autoconfig file.

    Ok – so a couple of things

    – Not sure why *some* of those files are marked as executable.
    Green filenames mean they are executable, you can also see this with the last ‘x’ in the permission strings on the left. None of mine are set to be executable.

    – Datestamps
    Its weird how all of your files have the same datestamp. I dont know how they all can have been written at the same time? I would expect the stock files in there to be 20 July as per the date on the 2.3 retropie image.

    For a comparison, check the 6:16 point on the video above.

    I would be tempted to re-install and check how they look from the outset, make one change and check the files again etc..

    Hi there, sorry I haven’t replied recently. I was stuck in bed ill for a few days and then Xmas/new year stuff has meant I’ve had no time to carry on with this.

    I’ve just got done reinstalling retro pie and running the controller configure again. I’ve gone to the same configs folder and ran ls -lah which has given then exact same results as my screenshot above. I’ve got identical date stamps on each config file and also the same files are in green showing executables.

    Literally no idea what I’m doing wrong. I’m just following the steps I found online to the letter. Weird.

    EDIT

    Decided to try a game anyway and guess what? It’s working! Really weird. Ah well, as long as it’s working I’m happy. Time will tell whether it’s working across all the emus and roms, but it shouldn’t be a problem now.
